Let me guess.
You're looking for math help. Maybe you have some homework due tomorrow
(or later today)? No time to waste.
Step
1: Determine whether or not you have an access code
If you
took 107 or 108 in a previous semester and purchased a textbook,
you may already have a MathXL student access code. It would have
come packaged with the book in a yellow envelope. Once registered,
the code is good for one year. Use the same log in and password.
Suppose you do not have
a code:
You can get one by purchasing a new textbook (codes come
packaged with new textbooks), or
The code can be purchased separately with a credit card
online for $40.95 and is good for one full year. To purchase a code,
go to www.mathxl.com and click
on “Buy Now”
Step
2: Register the code in Math XL
With code
in hand, go to www.mathxl.com
and click on REGISTER.
This is where you will create your personal login and password. Be
sure to enter a valid e-mail address (one that you check on a regular
basis). Instructors will use e-mail to alert you of important class
announcements.
Step
3: Enrolling in your course
For many
of you (all lab sections and some non-lab sections) enrollment in
MathXL is required. Log in to MathXL and click ENTER.
Next, click on I
AM TAKING A COURSE THAT IS USING MATHXL AND NEED TO ENROLL
IN MY INSTRUCTOR'S COURSE. Course IDs
will be given out the first week of class.
If you are not required
to enroll, but wish to use MathXL, follow the same procedure but
choose from the following list of course codes.

Hit ENROLL
and read the announcement on the homepage.
Following enrollment
(and depending on computer) you will be prompted to click on a browser
check link. Some installation may be necessary. Once completed,
this process will not have to be repeated.
Step
4: How to Get Help
You
should now be looking at the homepage for the course you selected.
Note: The Math 107 textbook cover is customized so it does not match
what you see.
From
the menu to the left, select HOMEWORK
AND TESTS. Homeworks are arranged by section.
Many of the problems in MathXL (or similar ones) will be assigned
by your instructor. Unless told otherwise, think of these as practice
problems and a place to get help. Here's how the system works.
Suppose
you want help in College Algebra (Math 108) with Section 1.1. You
have been assigned problem number 39. (Question 5 in MathXL). Your
screen will look like this.
Try
working out the problem (see, you still need paper and pencil).
If you can't and need help, go to the right of the screen and pick
a resource. Now try doing the problem yourself. Next, enter your
answer and hit Check Answer. You will then have
the option to go to another problem or ask for a similar exercise.
Wasn't
that easy! Next time will be even easier. Just log in and your course
will open immediately. There is one warning. Unlike those infomercials,
we can't promise results. MathXL gives the help, but study and practice
are up to you.
If
you have any questions about MathXL, try asking your instructor.
If he/she can't help you, contact dmussa@math.siu.edu.
