Course Content

Treatment of the major concepts and techniques of single-variable calculus, with careful statements but few proofs. Differential and integral calculus of the elementary functions with associated analytic geometry. This course will cover sections in the text through chapter 7.

Requirements and Grading

Grades will be determined on the basis of the following:

Homework will be assigned and collected daily. Quizzes will be given twice a week. Homework is due at class time, but can be submitted electronically. Late homework will not be accepted. The lowest 20% of homework and quiz grades will be dropped. Quizzes and exams can only be made up in exceptional circumstances (such as documented illness) as approved by the instructor. It is in your best interest to get approval for make-up exams in advance when possible. Hour exams are tentatively scheduled for September 18, October 14, November 4, and December 4.

Grades will be based on an 89% A, 78% B, 67% C, 56% D scale.

Regular attendance, consistent homework and regular review of earlier material are essential for successful completion of the requirements of the course. Working together with your classmates on homework can be helpful when the end goal is to increase each individual's independent proficiency in the material. All written work submitted for a grade is to be the student's own work or contain complete references.

Withdrawal

The last day to withdraw from the course without a grade is Sunday, September 6. The last day to withdraw from the course with a grade of W is Sunday, October 18. You should be aware that the grade INC (incomplete) cannot be used as a withdrawal and can only be assigned to students who are passing the course and for reasons beyond their control cannot complete all class assignments. See the undergraduate catalog for more details.

Emergency Procedures

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for study and work. Because some health and safety circumstances are beyond our control, we ask that you become familiar with the SIUC Emergency Response Plan and Building Emergency Response Team (BERT) program. Emergency response information is available on posters in buildings on campus, available on BERT's website at www.bert.siu.edu, Department of Safety's website www.dps.siu.edu (disaster drop down) and in Emergency Response Guideline pamphlet. Know how to respond to each type of emergency.

Instructors will provide guidance and direction to students in the classroom in the event of an emergency affecting your location. It is important that you follow these instructions and stay with your instructor during an evacuation or sheltering emergency. The Building Emergency Response Team will provide assistance to your instructor in evacuating the building or sheltering within the facility.
