Jerzy Kocik has been awarded the Lester R. Ford Award from the Mathematical Association of America for an article, written jointly with Andrzej Solecki, titled "Disentangling a Triangle" and published in the March 2009 issue of American Mathematical Monthly. The award was announced at the MathFest 2010 Prize Session held in August in Pittsburgh, PA.

Professor George Parker retired this fall. Here are some pictures.

Congratulations! To Professor Dashun Xu and Professor MingQing Xiao, who have both been awarded a three-year research grant from the National Science Foundation. They will receive funding, in collaboration with Professor John D. Reeve of the SIUC Zoology Department. This grant will be carried out in collaboration with Professor James Cronin of Louisiana State University.

Professor Spector has been awarded a three year NSF grant for his proposal "Analysis of Stability and Instability for Elastic Materials"

2011 Outstanding Teacher in the College of Science

Once again, Kathleen Pericak-Spector has won the Outstanding Teacher in the College of Science award for 2011. She won this award for the first time in 1997.

IL-MO Regional Undergraduate Mathematics Conference

was held November 13th on the SIUC campus this year. We had a great turnout for the conference and hope to see some of you again next year.

Catalyst Summer Institute

Algebra Project/Young People's Project SIUC Summer Institute program provided a new math experience for some Illinois and Ohio high school students. This is the first interaction of the long term NSF funded grant program run by Gregory Budzban and Lee McEwan to develop an innovative way to learn mathematics.

To Professor Joseph Hundley and Professor Bhaskar Bhattacharya, who have each been awarded three-year research grants from the National Science Foundation.

Professor Hundley will receive funding for the project "Integral Representation of Langlands L Functions".

Professor Bhattacharya will receive funding for the project "Constrained Statistical Inference and Information Theory".

Isaac Newton Institute Visit

Professor Salah Mohammed visited the Isaac Newton Institute in the spring semester. While he was there he visited several universities and was invited to present several talks.

Fulbright Visiting Scholar Award

Professor Yuri Gliklikh from Voronezh State University, Voronezh, Russia, has received a Fulbright Visiting Scholar award to visit the Mathematics Department for the three-month period February through April 2011. Professor Gliklikh is a world authority on stochastic geometry and its applications in mathematical physics. He will be working alongside SIUC Professor Salah Mohammed.

Honors Day 2010

Winners of several Awards were announced April 11th at the annual Honors Day Ceremonies.
