RESEARCH PAPERS, THESES, AND DISSERTATIONS
In preparing your research paper, thesis, or dissertation, you may use any typing package or program that meets the requirements contained in the Department of Mathematics Guidelines (link below). The departmental guidelines using LaTeX have been approved by the Graduate School and adapt the Graduate School Guidelines (Thesis/Dissertation, Research Papers) to the special needs in mathematics. It is also recommended that students check with their advisor prior to selecting a typing program. When done, theses and dissertations are uploaded to Proquest. Research papers are to be uploaded into OpenSIUC.
The student is responsible for knowing and following the Graduate School guidelines and incorporating the department guidelines as necessary when preparing their paper. At the Master's level, the student must determine with the department advisor whether they are preparing a research paper or a thesis. This will determine the particular hours for which the student registers.
Below is a LaTeX template for a sample paper which has been approved by the Graduate School. The sample files below provide the necessary formatting for both the research papers and theses/dissertations. There are minor revisions to indicate which type of paper you are submitting. In the LaTeX sample files there are examples and comments to help you prepare your paper. Here are some links to LaTeX documentation on the web.

LaTeX2e Thesis Template
Download template11.zip. When you open this file on your disk, expand it out so each file (described below) is available for you to use. Sample File shows formatting.
There are 22 files included in the Thesis Template for the sample thesis document approved by the SIUC Graduate School. This file was created using PCTeX. There may be minor revisions needed if you are using MikTex.
Samples of formatting and hints are in each of the following files. Just delete the pages/parts you don't want and add your own text. As soon as you make changes to these files, be sure to save them under a new name, preferably something that identifies them as yours.

Resource for Economics
Download Econ-Template09.zip. This template file was approved by Graduate School at least 4 years ago and has not been kept up-to-date. Most formatting is the same as before, but be aware that you should consider your deadline two or more weeks before the Graduate School deadline -- submit it early to find out what the Graduate School may require before granting approval. You will need to figure out how to modify this template to meet their requirements
