TEXT: Algebra and Trigonometry
by Beecher, Penna, Bittinger, 3rd ed., ISBN: 0-536-433-038.
SYLLABUS: Chapter 5-7, 9.
PREREQUISTE: Chapter 1-4 (Math 108); Most of the formulas on Geometry and Algebra pages near the end of the textbook as well as all graphs on the inside back cover.
COURSE GOALS: To acquaint the student with the fundamental ideas of trigonometry. In particular, to develop knowledge and skills in: definitions of the trigonometric functions, graphing trigonometric functions, addition and subtraction formulae, double and half-angle formulae, inverse trigonometric functions, Laws of Sines and Cosines, vectors, polar coordinates and graphing polar equations, and conic sections.
EXAM: There will be
four in-class tests (check out dates on calendar provided), each worth 100
points. Final is two-hour, comprehensive, and common test worth 200 points.
QUIZ &
HOMEWORK: Quizzes are given
on Friday. Quiz problems would be very similar to those of homework. So make sure
you understand thoroughly and be able to reproduce problems on relevant
homework before taking quizzes. Homework is collected at the beginning of each
class. Late homework is not accepted. No make-up quiz.
ATTENDANCE: Attendance will be taken. After 3 absences, you will lose 40 points. After the 6th absence, a grade of “F” will be given. To enforce the attendance, besides not accepting late homework and giving make-up quiz, I will convert to zero homework or quiz that is not picked up.

CALCULATOR: You should get a scientific calculator such as TI-30. Programmable and graphing calculators are prohibited.
